Mohammad Reza Aref was born 19 December 1951 in Yazd, Iran.

He received The B.Sc. degree from School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Tehran, in 1975. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA, in 1976 and 1980, respectively.

He Came back to Iran in 1980 and was actively engaged in academic and political affairs.

He has published 439 technical papers in the field of Communication and Information Theory and Cryptography in international journals and conferences proceedings.
