Advanced Digital Integrated Circuit Lab

(AICDL)

In 2010, despite all research space shortcomings in the department, the head of the Electrical Engineering department, Dr. Fotuhi, allocated two rooms to the Electronics group for research lab. The rooms accommodate 22 students of four EE Dept. professors, namely, Dr. Ali Fotowat, Dr. Mahdi Shabany, Dr. Khosro Haj-sadeghi and myself. Later, we added another room to accommodate 5 more students of Dr. Fakharzadeh and Dr. Safarian.

With help of Setad Micro-electronics funds, the rooms were equipped with 25 cubicles, each of which has a computer. Later on, a number of servers and some IC test equipments are added to the equipments. The servers contain major analog and digital IC design cad tools. There are  two sets of advanced FPGA boards available in the lab along with a number of analog/RF test equipments. The front lounge of the rooms is equipped with presentation facilities for regular IC related talks mainly organized by Dr. Fotowat.

Given the number of professors who contribute to the lab space, a wide spectrum of IC design research areas are worked on in the lab; from Crypto-processors, to GPS receivers to low-power SRAM to LTE and WiMax detectors.

Some of my grad students, do their research in the lab while others prefer to work independently. The labs is open 24/7 except for major holidays in the Summer.

Each student has to fill up these documents before he is assigned a location in the lab. He needs to take the responsibility of the equipments before he starts using it:
